Cabin in the Woods.... -1 Star

I just finished watching Cabin in the Woods and can say that I disliked it.Though I think it showed some potential at the beginning, I feel the movie falls short by ignoring a few factors:

1) The lack of commitment to human emotion (scientists)

2) The lack of connection and justification in the beginning made the ending feel forced and out of place. (Think Lost Season 1 to Lost Season 5 in 1 hour) It made the fiction less believable.

3) I really disliked how the white coats played this world impacting event as the football world series, again, I think this it took away from the suspenseful mercy we expect from characters. Although I do think this strategy could have worked very well if one character carried these traits in order to anger the audience enough to wish a sweet revenge death to all.

The reason I only gave this movie a negative star instead of negative two, was due to their originality of encompassing many horror creatures in only an hour movie. Perhaps having grown up watching horror movies I have come to expect that thrill you experience when you first are presented with that suspenseful fear for the characters.

On your decision about getting an Xbox One or not. I know that at the moment Xbox is a much bigger TV console than Playstation; however, Playstation still has a lot of the same apps. It has Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon as well as it's own TV and Movie rental store. Unfortunately, it doesn't have HBO GO at the moment but I think that's being worked on. I don't know if this helps but I thought I'd through it out there.

The only reason I haven’t consider the PS4 is that asides from the lack of information (I haven’t read enough about it), I also haven’t used my PS3 much. When I first got it I’d only have time to play it every month or so and when I was ready to play I always had to do updates which were so long. Granted Xbox also had updates but they felt faster.

I do appreciate the feedback though from people who use PS3 or present good points for the PS4. After all I don’t want to be the blind horse who walks forward ignoring the great technology and their qualities.

XBOX ONE .... Pre-Ordering or not Pre-Ordering....

Since the announcement I have been dreadfully counting my pennies trying to make up my mind. To pre-order or not pre-order XBOX One.

Though I am very aware of the active debate (XBOX One vs PS4) I must say that I am really more interested in the XBOX not because of the games and the exclusivity but as the entertainment console it’s become. I am one of those few rare individuals who doesn’t watch cable TV.

I stay current with Game of Thrones using the HBO app on Xbox, renting videos via XBOX Video or Amazon Instant Video apps when not present on Netflix the idea of replacing most devices in the house with on sounds highly appealing. Especially since I do have cable, though I rarely look up anything on TV. The versatility it displayed on the announcement surely sold to me.

Regarding the 24hr need to ping to the internet, I see where a lot of users can get mad. To me that isn’t an issue as my XBOX is 24hr/7d/w on the same place and always connected.

I’ve come to be so accustomed to yelling XBOX, PAUSE in the middle of a movie that sometimes people think I am stupid when we’re watching a movie at their house and I yell “XBOX, PAUSE!” as I quickly make my way to the bathroom.

Poor little me I know.. so spoiled that he embarrasses himself. What is one to do? Well I guess you could help me get an XBOX ONE! ;)

At any rate I don’t know enough about the PS4 as I have not been keeping up with all the debates. People seem to bash each console more than highlight their qualities. Sad but seems to be the case.

I’m really excited for Skype via Kinnect through XBOX for my Skype dates with Mayura-san. I am even more excited about the little perks that Xbox Gold memberships will be offering like Skype group call and the free games they will be giving out monthly. Sadly I haven’t had much time in the past few years to play many games. In fact the only games I’ve played were FFXI and Resident Evil 6, which I am not even close to finish.

It’s sad really. I used to love playing video games until they came up with the most exciting thing on XBOX, the achievements. Even though it’s always fun to get an achievement as you play I have come to obsess over trying to get ALL achievements and then turning a fun experience into work. I have enough goals to meet at work and in life I don’t need another virtual check list. That was a major reason I stopped playing video games, trying to socially compete with everyone to have the best score, the best items and Gods know what else~ the old and the new.

I also can’t believe I am writing such a large post about nothing haha. To make it clear, I haven’t pre-ordered. But I really want too!

Bah… I can’t believe I forgot 2 years in a row of Anime Boston. The worst part is that I have had this planned on my calendar for a bit.

I even talked with Mayura about it before yesterday. I admit that I am not feeling the brightest today.

For those who had the opportunity to go…. I am much excited for you and will be looking up pics and tweets to relieve the experience through your words.

Also the Link Costume I meant to have done by this week that I started in November has not moved much. Time to examine my past 7 months and make a new plan. Summer is almost here but this rain keeps reminding me of how long this winter has been.

On a lighter note, I finally caught up on Games of Thrones. The story is so well written and in spite of magic making it so unpredictable, I must say that I can’t wait to see how how some of these characters get eliminated! *hint hint* Joffrey.

When the Surface Pro was released one of the issues that surprised us all was the pen that came with it didn’t have great drivers. It was basically incompatible with Photoshop, Sai Paint and many other applications designers sought appropriate to use the Surface Pro.

When I first heard of the Wacom Driver update for Surface Pro (Tablet PC) I jumped on it and tested it right away.

“Photoshop - WORKS!

SAI Paint - …. My issue was resolved, but now I have a worst one?”

I realized this change might have been due to the update.
Going back to Wacom Support I tried to report the issue in hopes that while they worked on the next version they tried to address it. In reality I did not even expect my feedback to have any effect.

One hour later I had an e-mail from an employee who has spent the past 5 days assisting and troubleshooting the issue. She told me that when trying the same hardware and application she had no problems and continued researching the possible cause.

Meanwhile I was experiencing connectivity issues with my Wi-Fi, along with the tablet and Photoshop was not able to recognize my video card. Having these many issues I decided to go back to the Microsoft store and put that 2 year warranty I paid for too good use.

Upon arriving at the store I explained my issue with the pen, Photoshop and Wi-Fi. After testing the tablet themselves and looking for some possible fixes they asked me if there was anything I needed backed up from my Surface.

Luckily I keep everything on the cloud so I didn’t. He offered me right there and then a brand new surface exchange. The only thing I didn’t bring back with me was the box since they needed to ship the old one. Additionally this exchange didn’t touch my 2 year paid warranty, they used the device 1 year warranty.

Before heading to the store I was positive that they would just tell me that I was out of luck since the 30 day after purchase had elapsed. That I’d be stuck with it.

When I got home the first thing I did was install SAI Paint and test the application. The jagged curved lines was still an issue. After downloading the update to the driver, the cursor being completely off in a portion of that application was now present again.

I contacted Wacom and explained that I had a brand new Surface and that the same issue occurred. Today they were able to identify and provide a work around. (see previous post)

I must say that these two companies have shown a outstanding customer service making this experience much less aggravating than what it could have been.

To end on positive note, Amazon has also earned a huge spot in my heart. Why? When watching a movie from Amazon Prime, our connection kept dropping for some odd reason.

The nest day we received a refund for having such a bad experience.
When they released the cloud services, Amazon added to my collection all the CDs I had purchased through them in the past at no additional cost.

Now that’s what I call - SURPRISE YOUR CUSTOMER!

Surface Pro Pen Driver Update

Wacom has published new drivers for the Wacom Pen included with the Surface Pro. Though Microsoft didn’t include these drivers on the updates released today the update can be downloaded directly from Wacom at http://www.wacom.com/en/support/drivers (choose tablet pc)

The update works great. As you can see on the picture above the lines line work is pretty neat and bend naturally. The only problem I found was on SAI Paint where in certain areas of the screen the cursor jumps a few inches from where its supposed to be. It seems that the jump is triggered on the applications non drawing area.

I tried reinstalling SAI Paint without any success, but I am happy to report the pen works fantastically otherwise. I don’t have a Cintiq Tablet to compare but I can only imagine that drawing on the surface now comes pretty close to a Cintiq tablet.

I’d love to know what you think.

edit 5/15/13: A way around this glitch in SAI Paint is to press tab to hide/show all tools. Use finger to make selections, it’s not optimal but it allows you to draw with no problems other wise.

edit 5/21/13: Wacom and I have been going back and forth via e-mail regarding the issue. Today we were able to find a workaround.

1) Right click on your desktop

2) Select Screen resolution

3) On the Address Bar [> Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > etc] Click Display.

4) Change the size of all items from Larger 150% to 125%

That’s it. You’ll be requested to log out and once back in the pen will work as intended. :)
